There were bare boards throughout the house when we moved in, and we had an extremely limited budget, so did the living room and the babies' bedroom. Someone gave us a load of second-hand laminate and we put it in our bedroom (badly). A few years ago a radiator burst and wrecked some, so we took up the really squishy bits and thought "must get that replaced". I think we're just used to the holes now!
