And level crossings. Apparently the incident was a level crossing. I thought it was a cattle grid but don't remember ;) Apparently there aren't any on the whole A road I was on but there was a level crossing 6 miles before the ambulance picked me up. God knows what happened in that 6 miles!!!!

GF - the A9 is one of the most dangerous roads in Scotland, being the main arterial route between Stirling/Perth and Inverness. It's bad enough driving it in a car, I'd hate to go anywhere near it on a bike!

Why come South at all? Why not keep going north into the real wilds, then get the train back?

Hmmmm I guess that's possible Duchess but when I did LEJOG I got a bit bored up there!!!

Good job you're all here or I'd die on the A9.

What about this attempt, would need an extra day but that's ok

goo.gl

I assume you will all also tell me the A96 is bad? I've avoided it but if its ok would ride on it

Nothing wrong with the A9 bike path. A mix of decent path, parallel roads to the A9 and bits of the old A9. Jump onto the A9 just before Inverness to avoid a long detour, much of that bit is steep downhill so you can keep up with traffic. Not many people on the bike path either.

Coming south from Inverness take the Loch Ness Marathon route backwards to Fort Augustus south of the Loch. I would balk at riding Fort Augustus to Fort William but iot is a lot safer than Loch Ness side.

I have done all that bit of Loch Ness and down to F William on A82 and thought it was fine.

A9 bike path doesn't sound too bad but it does sound a bit slow and faffy? Would the extra day coming back thru the Cairngorms be better?

Go via Granton to Aviemore and then you are on non-A9 roads? Or take a train to Aviemore and start there? Could fit in a wee trip to Cairngorm to limber up.
