Oh well said Jambomo, I was too chicken to mention the overkill involved ;-) You're not alone...

The iPad. I got one for Christmas, mainly because everyone was banging on about how brilliant it is and how I'd wonder how I lived without it once I'd got one. Well, it's my first foray into Apple products/touchscreen technology and so far I'm totally underwhelmed.

I do think that any kind of tragedy which is remotely connected with a football club can get totally overblown and lachrymose. Which always strikes me as being at odds with the cauldron of hate and abuse that you also frequently see associated with football crowds.

I think everything to do with football gets overblown - I blame Sky. Everything is either wonderful or awful, a player is either World class or not good enough. Up here (Scotland) everyone is made out to hate each other when barring the Old Firm (an sometimes Aberdeen) most teams and fans tend to be fairly equitable and found together in the pubs before and after games.

The media feel the need to exaggerate to an irritating degree. Sadly hillsborough was no exception.

Another vote for football. It seriously winds me up, it's banned in this house. For me, it seems to be idolising men who are indulged for their talent, more than any other British sportsmen. And the reverence with which it is held by the media drives me to furry. I was hoping one of the effects of the Olympics would be to stop fawning over football and footballers, and recognise hard work and sacrifice, but it appears not.

Has, or have, lolcats ever been funny, though, apart from amongst those for whom the expression "sacred cows" suggests solely the Indian meaning?

About This Thread

Maintained by GregP
Regular listeners of FT will know about this one. What national 'treasure' do you feel would be better on a skip rather than on a pedestal?

Someone (an MK Dons supporter) proposed AFC Wimbledon, about whom everyone gets misty eyed but he hated.

Other nominations included Bruce Forsyth and Seb Coe.

We were discussing this on the Rugby Wire (whch unforgivably is *not* called "y wifren rygbi ") as Martin Johnson was nominated.

It was suggested that a wider audience might enjoy the challenge.
