As winter approaches I'm after a running jacket. I've had a couple before but struggled with them as I get really hot when run and they seemed to hold the sweat in. I guess when I'm looking for is something light, water resistant and very breathable. It doesn't need to be fully waterproof. I'd be used for long, slow runs in poor weather. Anything short or fast I just wear a baselayer and accept I'm getting wet! Spotted the Harrier Exmoor as a start point as their other trail gear is good. |

Although I don't have one myself, the Alpkit jackets always get decent reviews. They have a range from full-on mountaineering ones, to ultralight running ones, and a few in between. If you want top of the range in terms of breathability and weight, then the Goretex Shakedry material is hard to beat. One example that uses this material is the Ronhill Tech Goretex Jacket - it is pretty expensive though at over £200. If you'd asked this question 2 or 3 years back lots of folk would have replied OMM Kamleika - it was a big favourite with runners. Unfortunately there seems to be a lot of reliability issues recently and seen a few reports saying to avoid ( of course you tend to just hear of the problems and not those who are happy ! ) It's a tricky one trying to balance weight, breathability, waterproofness and price ! |

There are sooo many. But if I read you correctly you don’t want a thick one? Just go for a normal craft/deflation/x brand that you find ok. A reeealy good one seems to be gore shakedry trail jacket, maybe check that one out! |

um
I use quite an old Ronhill jacket, with a mesh lining, that I find helps a lot as I also overheat in a jacket or waterproof. Or a thin Brookes (but I assume any will do) rain-resistant, so arms are open to the elements. |

All I can do is suggest what I've got and had. Of those, I love my inov-8 stormshell. Windproof and waterproof, so may be far more than you're after, especially at the price. I've also got an OMM kamleika smock. It's been very durable and does the job. I'd choose that as my workhorse waterproof jacket over the stormshell. |

I have always used the cheapest Mountain Warehouse shell jacket, I think the first was 12 quid in a sale and the identical replacement 20. Bright yellow, super light and breathable, wouldn’t be great in a real storm but I don’t go out when it’s like that! Front zip, pockets, no hood (I usually carry/wear a hat in winter). Easy to take off and tie round waist mid-run. I’d only describe it as shower and wind resistant rather than proof, but that’s all I need. The original is still going strong, just a bit frayed on the cuffs and I thought I’d spoil myself |

Very timely thread this. I've always done like jda and had a cheapo Mountain House bright yellow jacket. I've been caught out in heavy rain on the hills a couple of times recently and got a bit damp and just basically tried to get lower down quickly. So I was thinking of getting something more seriously waterproof. Obviously there is a trade-off between waterproof and breathable. I usually have a 15L running backpack with map, phone, compass, emergency blanket etc. so getting a more waterproof one of those would be sensible too.

[Timely as in the inov-8 Stormshell looks perfect, and I only started thinking about looking for something yesterday]
