Linds has chozzen On Bended Knees by Martin Goodman which is a proper serious book with all words and stuff.

Not to be confused with:

On Bended Knee: The Highland Brides, Book 3 by Tanya Hide

nor

On His Bended Knee: a Sweet Marriage of Convenience series (The Brides of Purple Heart Ranch Book 1) by Shanea Johnson

nor

On Bended Knee: A Montclair Christmas Novella (The Montclair Brothers Book 6) by Terri Marie

and especially not

On Bended Knee (Zebra Regency Romance) by Alice Holden, Kate Huntington & Laura Paquet

I mean, I didn't even know zebras could feel romantic but there you go.

Minimal. The style is spare and enigmatic.

Part One

Having recently buried my father, my mother took us to see the headteacher. ‘What larks!’ she said, only in a bit of a German accent. ‘Catharsis,’ she said, as the rain ran down her face in lieu of tears, ‘It is a German word meaning Deeply Symbolic.’

‘Is it?’ I queried. ‘I don’t…’

‘Shh,’ she said, ‘my beautiful idiot genius hateful boy. Here comes Mr Fiddly now.’

‘I shall be your new father figure,’ said Mr Fiddly, the headteacher, while stroking my hair. ‘You stupid boy. Yet you need my support, you idiot genius.’ Then he too fell over, said ‘Oh, I’ve karked it as well’ and shuffled off his mortal coil.

‘We shall be best friends,’ his widow said brightly through her tears as she pushed his corpse under the sofa with a shapely heel.

‘Yes we shall,’ my mother stated, ‘and we shall come to your house for high tea.’

‘And we shall come to yours too and our children will be great friends as well,’ quoth the widow Fiddly.

‘Huzzah,’ my mother said, forgetting to be German again as my grandparents weren’t around to disapprove. ‘This is how real people speak, isn’t it?’ she added haltingly.

‘Indubitably,’ sayeth Mme Fiddly.

Then some boys kicked a symbolic rabbit to death and it was time for tea.

Part Two

‘I shall be your new father figure,’ Herr Poptart said.

‘Uh-oh,’ I said expecting him to spontaneously combust.

Frau Poptart was a beautifully ugly woman with the face of an angel and the hair of a demon. Or was it the other way around?

‘Stop asking the questions about the War,’ Herr Poptart demanded, ‘and take ze dog Goebbels for a walk.’

‘But shouldn’t we remember?’ I asked. ‘Or should we?’

Herr Poptart was blind in one eye and deaf in the other. But he heard my doubts with his good eye and tried to climb the Berlin Wall in revenge. ‘You British do not understand,’ he cried. ‘The beautiful German architecture of the Wall.’

Unfortunately the East German guards neglected to shoot him and sadly, the book continued.

‘Tomas, you are an idiot. A beautiful young old stupid brilliant idiot,’ Herr Poptart said. ‘You shall meet further members of your extended family who conveniently also stand in for certain post-war attitudes. Now go from us. We love you so much you must go henceforth. PS – your nan’s snuffed it.’
