Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I think both are probably true TT. There are definitely some new pressures for young people, well for all of us. But are they "worse" than the pressures in the 30s or the 50s or the 70s? I can't say.

I definitely think talking about it is more common. I find that really refreshing and helpful. I can say to my son "I'm feeling really down today. Can we have a chat?" Or "can we not chat, but just sit?" [Or whatever feels right for us.]

That can only be good, surely?

Curly all the best my friend.

I have used meditation apps but transcendental meditation is my preferred method. I also practice Nichiren Buddhism, the chanting is quite mindful and am a reiki practitioner. Unfortunately, and I know I'd counter intuitive but doesn't help, I'm struggling to partake in spiritual activities such as these currently. Just thinking about it tires me.

Walking, especially barefoot is good too, or any type of grounding, and I guess we all know about the endorphins created by exercise and I would be interested to know how many people on Fetch began, or use, running or other forms of exercise to help manage their mental health.

I think I *always* feel better after a run.

But there is a risk of a spiral of knowing a run will help me, not being bothered to do it, making me feel guilty for not doing it, and so on...

Curly, walking by myself, and even sometimes running, can give me very sad thoughts. The physical benefits and some motivational benefits are undeniable, but being by myself and having time to think can be when I do some of my crying and some dark thoughts. Not always very healthy for me, ironically.

Yes HG, exactly the spiral I'm in with the spiritual stuff too obviously.

It is difficult.
I get overwhelmed as I call it, not exactly depressed. I think I float in the shadowlands but never quite reach the black dog stages if that makes sense?
I suffer very badly from SAD, so I really largely am troubled during the dark months of winter. I try and counteract that with a SAD alarm clock and a SAD light but the last couple of year I have struggled terribly as I have not been allowed to take any holidays abroad.
My main saviour to get me through winter unscathed is travelling to the Southern Hemisphere for 2-4 weeks in December/January.
Last time I was able to stock up on light was December 2019... Not a good thing!

I definitely started running on ‘spiritual’ advice TT where I was told by a mentor that I needed something to take me away from everything else in my life and where I was just me, not a father, husband, worker etc, just me. That helped me massively and still does. What’s simpler than just moving forward and putting one foot in front of the other? Unless you’re injured of course!

Running off road and / or in the dark helps me. You really have to focus on the now and it enables me to get away from my worries
