I should probably confess that I haven't lost it through some fast marathon or mega ultra - in fact no running was involved at all. But I am about to lose (most) of my big toe nail, which is currently hanging on by a (literal) thread.

So when it finally gives up the ghost, how much is the bit underneath going to to hurt? And can I do anything to protect it, or stop it getting banged or bruised? Toenails are there for a reason, I assume...?

if it falls off on its own over period of time, it's probably healed underneath already and be fine (or mine have been in the past.) I didn't have problems with needing to protect it or anything.
when i lost one where it got physically ripped off that was a bit of a mess underneath and needed to be properly dressed, protected etc.

Have lost 3 toenails recently. Hung on to them for as long as I could with the help of bruise coloured/purple nail varnish and I hardly noticed when they finally came off. New nail had grown underneath.

I've just lost my big toenail too. Well, it was hanging on by two threads so I cut it off before it got ripped off.

The bit underneath is a bit sensitive to touch but only because it's not used to it. It's not painful and doesn't catch and is fine when running as the sock protects it. If you have any dried blood or loose dead skin, it's probably sensible to get rid of it to keep it clean.

I'm on the hunt for fake toenails if anyone has any recommendations.

The key issue with toenails is that you should never under any circumstances take a picture and post it here for us.

Lost several. Never been a problem. The first one came off when it got caught in the sheet during the night and himself was surprised by my leaping out of bed shrieking. Apart from the first swim in the sea the next day no problems.

The others have all been fine.

Lost lots over the years from various mishaps involving weights, horses, doors, ill-fitting shoes ( I blame my mother - I was only about 5) but not running. As everyone else says, by the time they fall off it feels a bit 'naked' underneath but not actually painful. May appreciate a plaster for a couple of days until it hardens up.
As for fake toenails, I find ordinary fake nails work but you need to trim them to shape (thumb ones just fit my big toenails, but my toenails are now very abnormal and quite narrow) and nail polish hides them well. You do need some vestige of underlying nail to glue them to, however.

I've lost several, never really had much of a problem, aside from the fact that if you paint nail varnish onto the soft nail/skin underneath it doesn't last as long!!
