That's interesting RF. I eat the skin on all squashes apart from butternut and crown prince - I don't like the texture of those 2.

Have made the butternut Squash skin into soup in a pressure cooker (love my pressure cooker), then used a hand blender to liquid use it. Ya wouldn’t know the texture. If it is baked it is like a chip to me :)

I've done that RF and still find the texure "plasticky", as did a couple of my pals I tested it on. I eat all bits of things where possible. I like the grainy skin of sweet dumpling, onion squash etc and will eat that skin straight from the oven.

Cider sounds lovely! One day I hope to have my own place (not a rental in dusty disrepair) and get my fermentation on big-time.

Ahhh RS - if you were near me, I'd be asking for your butternut squash skins ;)

The fermentation takes about 1-2 months. Still working thru the apples had from autumn :)

Have just crushed & mixed egg shells, banana skins and coffee grounds as a bit of food for my house plants.

Lots of produce from the garden.

Getting ready for winter:
I have been freezing my black berries so that I can grab a handful in winter and add to stuff like porridge etc
Have been freezing my beans; and grating my courgettes and freezing them as well.
Herbs - cut and freeze

What are your tips for extending the life of vegetables and berries.

I just lacto-fermented baby cucumbers, but they'll get eaten soon!

FT Article on how broken recycling is:

Sustainability:
----------------
A growing "want" (consumption) has an impact on our world's resources. Historically we have gone through periods of frugality & eco-consciousness and always returned to the same apathy & couldn't give a damn about the environment we live in.

A linear economy means products head for the landfill. As landfills fill quickly, incinerators are now being put into place in the UK. Recycling is a broken system due to economics and incineration is simply the destruction of our resources.

The best would be for a circular economy and ways to close the loop.

Zero wasters care about their impact. On our journey to a zero waste lifestyle what are we willing to compromise on?

Resources for reducing landfill waste:

Freecycle: freecycle.org

or sell it on Ebay, car boot
Wrap: wrap.org.uk

How Stuff Works: home.howstuffworks.com

Food waste: consider composting. For cooked food waste have a look at Bokashi (FYI Anaerobic composting: http://www.alternative-energy-tutorials.com/aerobic-composting/anaerobic-composting.html)
