Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Looks like he is saying a cycle ride of between 30 mins and an hour, Sigh.

The 'depending on level of fitness" throwaway comment is inrreresting. Perhaps Gove is only good for half an hour

Indeed.

So, on my way home from my run today, (about 9:30am) I decided to run up the A34 Northbound against the flow of traffic, knowing that the path was narrow and that running in the road would be required to maintain a 2 metre distance if I met someone else coming the other way:

I did not expect to meet a family of four (including two pre-schoolers on tiny bikes); where would they have moved to if they'd met a similar family coming the other way?

I ran in the gutter facing the oncoming traffic, and even though I was wearing a bright red top, only some of the traffic moved for me. One lorry didn't move at all.

I'm sure this situation is being repeated across the country, and that more severe restrictions will follow as a consequence.

*I only ran in the road while going past the family, then I was back on the pavement.

Gove saying that for most people is completely fine by me. Most people don't run marathons, not ever, and very few people run them regularly as their main goal of the year.

Not that I'm training for one now.

Govey has also said:

"people can go for the standard length of run or walk that they ordinarily would have done. But… the important thing is, once a day"

bbc.co.uk

Clearly, a 30 min run is a fair effort for many people.

Michael Gove made his ‘off the cuff’ statement about 1 hour for walking and 30 minutes for running, depending on the individual, during his interview with Andrew Marr on the BBC this morning. Andrew Marr was trying to get Gove provide more specific detail, but Gove explicitly avoided doing that. His ‘off-the –cuff statement was in the context of describing his own 30 minute run that morning, Quite reasonably he added

that it depends on what the individual is used to doing. It was clear that Gove did not want to give a definitive statement about duration.

I am usually a bit annoyed when politicians refuse to give an explicit answer to a question, but in this instance, Gove’s response is quite rational. The balance between strengthening your immune system by moderate exercise or (perhaps) transiently weakening by excessive exercise. it almost certainly depends on how fit you are.

In fact the chance of weakening your immune response by excessive exercise is still debated, though evidence from animal studies provides some reason to expect that strenuous exercise while incubating a respiratory virus is harmful. Much less controversial is the evidence that moderate regular exercise strengthens the immune system.

Life isn't black or white. Until such a time that the guidance is a law, just use your common sense.

And I agree entirely with Canute, now is not the time to sharpen and go for pace. Now is the time for base building within your level of fitness.

About This Thread

Maintained by Canute
Covid-19 case numbers continue to rise exponentially in the UK.

It is even more crucial to do everything we can to slow the rate of onset of new cases. Nonetheless, exercise remains important for our health.

The relevant piece of the legislation in England is:

The Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (England) Regulations 2020

Restrictions on movement

6.—(1) During the emergency period, no person may leave the place where they are living without reasonable excuse.

(2) For the purposes of paragraph (1), a reasonable excuse includes the need—

(a) to obtain basic necessities, including food and medical supplies for those in the same household (including any pets or animals in the household) or for vulnerable persons and supplies for the essential upkeep, maintenance and functioning of the household, or the household of a vulnerable person, or to obtain money, including from any business listed in Part 3 of Schedule 2;

(b) to take exercise either alone or with other members of their household;

-----
That is an abbreviated version. Here is a link to a more comprehensive specification of section 6:
legislation.gov.uk

Similar regulations apply in Scotland, where section 8, (5) (b) states:
(b) to take exercise, either alone or with other members of their household.
In Northern Ireland, section 5 (2) (b) is the same:
(b) to take exercise either alone or with other members of their household;

In Wales, the regulations state that you can leave the house no more than once a day for exercise, The relevant section [section 8] states:

(b) to take exercise, no more than once a day, either alone or with other members of the household.

-----------

Here is a link to the guidance regarding a reasonable excuse to leave the house, issued by the National Police Chiefs Council (for England):

Note added 26th May: unfortunately the clear guidelines issued in April have been taken down and replaced by a more complex collection of documents.
-------------

The fact that the government accepts the importance of exercise places a responsibility on us to exercise in a way that reduces our risk of becoming a clinical case rather than increasing our risk.

Here is a review of the factors that influence the relationship between exercise and function of the immune system
