Anyone got any idea how to pace this race? I've only done one ultra before. Is there a formula (marathon time x 4.27!) or something like that?

a decent rule of thumb would be around 3 x your road marathon time Damo, but that woudl be dependent on your training and experience.

Ive had to admit defeat this year and play the injury card, Ill still be up there for the rqce though supporting a mate of mine.

I've not run an event of this length before so I'm very worried about pace.
I looked at last years results and found people (through the Power of 10 website) that have the approx same marathon finish time as me. I then looked at their splits - the average pace does seem to alter crazily - but I guess that is the terrain? Seems OK up to the first checkpoint, then increases massively.

Yes, the easiest part is the first 17 miles, you then have about 1200 feet of climb and dropover three miles into teh first checkpoint. Don't be fooled bu the word easiest, its not easy, just easier. You then have around 8 miles of hugely undulating trail (and a nice soft sandy beach) before hitting the loch side section which is just mental up and down rocks. After the 40 mile checkpoint it is a mix of very undulating road, trail and mud until you hit 50 miles when you are treated to a flat 3 miles to the finish. A truly fantastic race.

Joopsy has summed it up very well, the difference in terrain causes a substantially different change in pace over the course of the route. As a general rule, the faster the runner, the more marked the change in pace. And given the terrain variance, it's pretty hard to correlate road marathon pace to Fling pace.
How much, if any, of the route have you been able to recce? It might help you match pace for each of the sections?

Thanks for the advice guys. Ive not recced any of the route, so it will be all new to me.
Good idea Duchess about matching pace for each section, that will certainly help me.

damo, you might find this blog interesting http://ultrarunningcommunity.com/13-report/1127-all-about-sector-pacing. That's how I'm thinking of approaching it, albeit a little slower. Hoping to recce the lochside section early in April to see just how 'technical' it is...
