There are lots of factors that have affected attitudes towards resurfacing, Fetchez la vache. It was chosen for me because I was quite young for the surgery when I had it (35 years old at the time) so it was felt that I was too young for THR at the time. Since then the 'resurfacing' success rate hasn't been as good as expected. There have been some problems, I think, with inexperienced surgeons doing the surgery, although I must emphasise that my surgeon was brilliant and did an awesome job and completed hundreds of hip revision successfully (sadly for his patients, he's now retired). Also the failure rate (in women particularly) post op was higher that with THRs. I've been very lucky but would definitely go down the route of having a THR if/when required. |

I was initially offered resurfacing but a bit of research told me the success rate, particularly for women as @Ness says wasn’t good. My surgeon is a runner ( we were both in Sale Harriers at the time) so he didn’t tell me not run. As you say there’s no data on the wear rate of the hardware in runners so I’d rather risk it and be happy doing what I’m doing!

Exactly, jennywren. In fact, my consultant always said I should keep on running if I wanted to. I sent him photos of me in my 20th 'hip anniversary' celebratory half marathon in 2023 (it also happened to be my 50th half marathon!) I'd rather risk it too and be happy doing what I'm doing.

My surgeon did stick his fingers in his ears and sang lalala when I told him I was doing cross country
