“Mercenaries are going to blow stuff up and no-one has their backs except their own crew”. There you go, Rae. You’re up to speed. Fill your boots.😉 |

I seem to remember enjoying it quite a lot. For what it is (and what it isn’t!).

Expendables sounds like a film I’m happy to leave for others to enjoy. Anyway I saw poor things. Bonkers, brilliantly so. Very funny too, with a nice line about the means of production that I appreciated. Definite candidate for the film of 2024. I also want a dog-duck as a pet. A couple walked out about 90 minutes or so in. Perhaps the unbridled sexuality of Bella was a bit much for them? |

Caught up on a few things recently:- - The Creator - really good, nice world built pretty rapidly; usual challenge with "robots" somehow being less good at shooting than people. Felt oddly light Rogue One until it clicked that Gareth Edwards was at the helm of both - Theater (sic) Camp - mockumentary style, quirky, but good hearted and enjoyable. Nothing new, but well played by all - Melancholia - only half way through this, but Dunst is excellent even though this is much more of an arty mood piece than I was expecting. Not seen the sci-fi aspects just yet, expect that's in the second half |

Seeing as how it was my book of the year when it was released, the writer has been involved in the production and I'll go see Saoirse Ronan in just about anything, I'm very much looking forward to The Outrun. I don't think I've been to the cinema since Covid. Great review in the Guardian this week: theguardian.com |

Not seen the sci-fi aspects just yet, expect that's in the second half I really liked Melancholia, as you say it's very arty and moody. The sci fi element is kind of simultaneously barely noticeable and central to the plot. |

Oscars noms out bbc.co.uk For once, I've seen the top nomm'd film before the nominations are out. But plenty I've not seen (whether that matters or not, a different question). |

3 films are entirely or partially in a foreign language which is surprising for the academy.

Makes the best "foreign film" category a bit redundant! Never really understood why they consider foreign films to be something "other" than having the potential to be the best, if the Oscars are trying to be the "World Cup" of films (beyond the practicalities of ensuring that all films from across the world get well enough viewed by the panels doing the nominating and voting). Wonder if we'll ever see them ditching the best female actor and male actor categories and switching to simply best actor? |
