I'm definitely more of a "Singin' In The Rain" cinema goer rather than a "bleak black and white Eurodrama dissecting the Human Condition" cinema goer.

Isn't that like a 1950s version? It is very good. I wasn't aware of a good more recent version. Would be interested if so. :-) G

The 50s one is the one I was thinking of. 78 for Robert Powell is good too but not as. I see there was a 2008 TV movie. Anyone ever seen that? :-) G

I’ve seen the 2008 TV movie it wasn’t the best version but there are some easily recognisable locations. The East end of Princes St. Hopetoun House and the Bo’ness steam railway.

I've read the book which I was disappointing. The 50s film version is allegedly the best version in any media

Going back to discussion of 'Citizen Kane', Orson Welles directed and starred in 'Touch Of Evil', film noir at its peak. The film opens with a 3 minute 20 sec. tracking shot of a bomb laden car. Janet Leigh, Marlene Dietrich and Charlton Heston co-star.
