CB - if you're still here - don't dismiss your highest HR reading just because you've not seen it since! That's your max!

Yes Cavehill. I did a 66% session on hilly course other day and it was strange cos it felt quite hard on flat bits and downhill bits to keep the HR up. I'm still learning how to get down hills quick. Lean a bit but not too much, soften knees and turn legs over quickly (maintain fast cadence)

Cracking run earlier, Mile warm up, just over a mile at sub 70%, 3 x 1 Mile reps at over 85%, and then a nice sub 70% run back... felt really good.

Advice needed please
I'm running my first 10k this sunday. What %HR should I aim for in the race? Also I want to get in a fairly fast training run tomorrow. Should I aim for just around 5miles at 10k pace +20s ?

Norrin,

If you have been using HR percentages through your training then I would say you shoot for 85% avgHR for the race. It is hard to say what you should to tommorow without following your training program. The worst thing you can do this week is get to fatigued for the race. So, just be sure you don't over do the pace or distance this week. Good luck

Thanks J.
I've been following the Furman First plan - 3 days running with light runs/x-training between. This allows lots of flexibility. I have been following pace but recently am concentrating on %HR. I'm down for a 5mile run at 10K + 20s this week and thought if I run that tomorrow and give myself extra rest before sunday.

Loca
Just a quikck update on my HR training.

Yesterday 6 miles @ 8:10mm ave WHR 67%
Today 6.1 miles @ 7:58mm ave WHR 66%

I notice that I am now getting much better at pace judgemet for hills and slowing down sufficiently to stop HR going above 70%, something I struggled with last week.

Everything you need to know about training with a heart rate monitor. Remember the motto "I can maintain a fast pace over the race distance because I am an Endurance God". Mind the trap door....

Gobi lurks here, but for his advice you must first speak his name. Ask and you shall receive.

A quote:

"The area between the top of the aerobic threshold and anaerobic threshold is somewhat of a no mans land of fitness. It is a mix of aerobic and anaerobic states. For the amount of effort the athlete puts forth, not a whole lot of fitness is produced. It does not train the aerobic or anaerobic energy system to a high degree. This area does have its place in training; it is just not in base season. Unfortunately this area is where I find a lot of athletes spending the majority of their seasons, which retards aerobic development. The athletes heart rate shoots up to this zone with little power or speed being produced when it gets there." Matt Russ, US International Coach
