Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Yeah most of the time optical and chest are the same for me, and when they diverge, the average tells me they haven't diverged.

What I'm saying is - if you look at the figures, and visually they look poles apart, but actually they aren't. Average is a pretty good broad indicator I'd say, unless the figures were failing in a particular way that meant the average stayed the same but they were way off.

I'm more interesting in Zwift/Garmin/Heart rate. How do they link? Normally if I'm running it pairs and that's it. Zwift, never seems to pair, what other step do I need to perform?

Chris - It's pretty hard to be poles apart consistently and have the same average so sounds like you're saying they weren't poles apart?

Baz's looks more bizarre in the sense that the gap between average per each mile and the max is bigger. If I didn't know that you were doubting the data WW I'd look at the data from mile 11 onwards and say that looked kosher; reasonable range, ramping up towards the end when your pace dropped off etc. Really odd given that it is clearly nonsense in comparison to the early miles.

My wife's garmin often does something similar in races, the first time it happened to her on a very cold and wet HM she worried the watch was telling her something was wrong, even though she didn't feel anything other than cold, tired and wind-battered.

the reality is that after 2 miles at 6:3x I'd be in the 160s and the only way is up if you're gonna hold the pace across a marathon (if you're inadequately trained, like me).

I'm back using a chest strap now after about 6 years of not looking at HR at all. I'm getting some interesting results. I appear to be able to hold HR relatively flat / stable when running at a reasonable pace, let's say 7:30s for 10-12 miles. However, if I run at slower paces (let's say 8:30s) my HR is not massively lower (8-10 bpm) and I find it hard to control. I wonder whether years of neglecting my true aerobic base has resulted in this. I doubt that Baz would have that issue, for instance.

I once relied on my HR to guide me in a race. It ruined me and I've never tried again. Fortunately it was one of those short Manchester marathons and I still ran a *PB*. Ahem....

You need to run more easy miles to fix that WW.

Have people had a look at Fetch's new VO2 max calculator? I'm finding very consistent results from everything from a walk to the faster bits of a fake parkrun. (Taken from my optical hr.)

I haven't made a habit of it but an 8 km and 10 km race in December give results that are consistent. Neither match my Coros though, not that I worry about that.

Everything you need to know about training with a heart rate monitor. Remember the motto "I can maintain a fast pace over the race distance because I am an Endurance God". Mind the trap door....

Gobi lurks here, but for his advice you must first speak his name. Ask and you shall receive.

A quote:

"The area between the top of the aerobic threshold and anaerobic threshold is somewhat of a no mans land of fitness. It is a mix of aerobic and anaerobic states. For the amount of effort the athlete puts forth, not a whole lot of fitness is produced. It does not train the aerobic or anaerobic energy system to a high degree. This area does have its place in training; it is just not in base season. Unfortunately this area is where I find a lot of athletes spending the majority of their seasons, which retards aerobic development. The athletes heart rate shoots up to this zone with little power or speed being produced when it gets there." Matt Russ, US International Coach
