Yeah most of the time optical and chest are the same for me, and when they diverge, the average tells me they haven't diverged. What I'm saying is - if you look at the figures, and visually they look poles apart, but actually they aren't. Average is a pretty good broad indicator I'd say, unless the figures were failing in a particular way that meant the average stayed the same but they were way off. |

I'm more interesting in Zwift/Garmin/Heart rate. How do they link? Normally if I'm running it pairs and that's it. Zwift, never seems to pair, what other step do I need to perform?

Here are my Abingdon stats from the Optical. based on past experience being around 160 is what I expected and towards the end it would creep up towards and maybe over 170, but you can see something started to change in mile 14. 1) 1m - 6:46(6:46/m) 150/164bpm 83cal 8.86/10.29mph 2) 1m - 6:37(6:37/m) 158/164bpm 87cal 9.07/9.54mph 3) 1m - 6:47(6:47/m) 158/162bpm 88cal 8.84/9.23mph 4) 1m - 6:54(6:54/m) 161/165bpm 91cal 8.7/9.62mph 5) 1m - 6:51(6:51/m) 161/167bpm 90cal 8.76/9.1mph 6) 1m - 6:46(6:46/m) 160/165bpm 87cal 8.86/9.46mph 7) 1m - 6:52(6:52/m) 159/164bpm 86cal 8.74/9.18mph 8) 1m - 6:49(6:49/m) 162/169bpm 88cal 8.8/9.35mph 9) 1m - 6:43(6:43/m) 162/166bpm 85cal 8.92/9.29mph 10) 1m - 6:48(6:48/m) 161/168bpm 83cal 8.83/9.08mph 11) 1m - 6:44(6:44/m) 162/178bpm 82cal 8.92/9.25mph 12) 1m - 6:46(6:46/m) 160/166bpm 74cal 8.88/9.25mph 13) 1m - 6:47(6:47/m) 160/166bpm 73cal 8.86/9.25mph 14) 1m - 6:50(6:50/m) 158/162bpm 64cal 8.78/8.97mph 15) 1m - 6:50(6:50/m) 152/160bpm 47cal 8.78/9.12mph 16) 1m - 6:58(6:58/m) 153/160bpm 49cal 8.62/9.31mph 17) 1m - 6:47(6:47/m) 150/158bpm 37cal 8.85/9.14mph 18) 1m - 6:49(6:49/m) 151/159bpm 41cal 8.8/9.02mph 19) 1m - 6:48(6:48/m) 153/159bpm 47cal 8.82/9.12mph 20) 1m - 6:46(6:46/m) 143/159bpm 26cal 8.87/9.12mph 21) 1m - 6:52(6:52/m) 145/165bpm 29cal 8.73/9.12mph 22) 1m - 6:50(6:50/m) 146/159bpm 34cal 8.79/9.02mph 23) 1m - 7:00(7:00/m) 148/157bpm 38cal 8.58/8.97mph 24) 1m - 7:00(7:00/m) 148/161bpm 40cal 8.58/8.95mph 25) 1m - 7:19(7:19/m) 141/167bpm 34cal 8.2/8.64mph 26) 1m - 7:10(7:10/m) 134/150bpm 22cal 8.38/8.95mph 27) 0.18m - 1:10(6:17/m) 128/132bpm 2cal 9.54/9.93mph |

Chris - It's pretty hard to be poles apart consistently and have the same average so sounds like you're saying they weren't poles apart?

there was clearly something in the air / on the wrist that day Baz! Baz's looks more bizarre in the sense that the gap between average per each mile and the max is bigger. If I didn't know that you were doubting the data WW I'd look at the data from mile 11 onwards and say that looked kosher; reasonable range, ramping up towards the end when your pace dropped off etc. Really odd given that it is clearly nonsense in comparison to the early miles. My wife's garmin often does something similar in races, the first time it happened to her on a very cold and wet HM she worried the watch was telling her something was wrong, even though she didn't feel anything other than cold, tired and wind-battered. |

the reality is that after 2 miles at 6:3x I'd be in the 160s and the only way is up if you're gonna hold the pace across a marathon (if you're inadequately trained, like me). I'm back using a chest strap now after about 6 years of not looking at HR at all. I'm getting some interesting results. I appear to be able to hold HR relatively flat / stable when running at a reasonable pace, let's say 7:30s for 10-12 miles. However, if I run at slower paces (let's say 8:30s) my HR is not massively lower (8-10 bpm) and I find it hard to control. I wonder whether years of neglecting my true aerobic base has resulted in this. I doubt that Baz would have that issue, for instance. I once relied on my HR to guide me in a race. It ruined me and I've never tried again. Fortunately it was one of those short Manchester marathons and I still ran a *PB*. Ahem.... |

You need to run more easy miles to fix that WW.

Have people had a look at Fetch's new VO2 max calculator? I'm finding very consistent results from everything from a walk to the faster bits of a fake parkrun. (Taken from my optical hr.) fetcheveryone.com/training-calculators-vo2max.php |

I haven't made a habit of it but an 8 km and 10 km race in December give results that are consistent. Neither match my Coros though, not that I worry about that.
