Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

In that case I submit a bid of 14, assuming you don't count non-competitive games (in which case they could have as many friendlies between them as they liked).

Two teams in League One, both in the Champions League. One has won the Champions League two years in a row despite consecutive relegations, and therefore secured the returning champions' place each time. The other won the Europa League last year after a domestic cup the year before.

2x league
1x league playoff for 4th/5th after they finish equal on points, goal difference and everything else
2x promotion play-off semis
2x FA Cup (inc replay)
2x League Cup semis
2x Champions League knockouts
1x Johnstone's Paint Trophy
1x UEFA Super Cup.

On page 3 Binks counted two games for the JPT, but surely all JPT ties are one-legged with no replays?

I also considered trying to shoehorn in the Club World Cup on the basis that one would have the European champions' place and the other could have the host nation's place after winning the Premier League then being demoted to League One for financial irregularities. But that would just be silly.

*facepalm* 13, not 14. I wavered back and forth whether I could justify the CWC or not, and forgot to change the total.

ahh yes, I guess it is possible to play in the Champions League and in League 1, this would involve those two teams winning the FA and League cup 2 years ago and getting relegated and then last year winning the CL and Europa cup and getting relegated again!

Seems about as likely as Leicester winning the league.

I revise my bid to 14 (I mean it this time).

Same scenario as above. England hosts the Club World Cup. Club A enters as European champions. Club B wins the Premier League in the previous season but all its floodlights then break and its owner is so miserly he buys cheap new ones capable only of a lux value of 500. Consequently they are demoted to League One for failing to meet the floodlight standards of the Premier League and the Championship, but retain their place in the Champions League and Club World Cup. Club B gets around the Champions League floodlight standards by playing home European ties at someone else's ground (this is quite common when clubs from the smaller European nations reach a further stage than expected). The CWC and UEFA Super Cup are as any fule kno played in neutral grounds so no floodlight-based worries there.

The list of ties is therefore exactly as above, plus 1 CWC match. 14.

JPT is two legged in the Area Finals so 2xJPT is perfectly valid.

Binks, as a Forest fan, I got the "I Believe in Miracles" dvd for Christmas.

After watching it several times, maybe Leicester can do it. And win the Champions League next season.
And the season after that.

Would it count as playing more if a few of the games got abandoned due to bad weather, floodlight failure etc and they replayed another time.

Although that is just being silly now.

Thanks Nelly. I didn't read Wikipedia's article closely enough. My list goes up to 15 then.

Apparently the two welsh sides in the Welsh Cup are feasible. The Welsh Cup doesn't exclude clubs in the English league, but it does exclude them from getting a Europa Cup place if they win it. Does that take it up to 17? Or are clubs taking part in the Welsh Cup excluded from the FA Cup?

Many Football League Clubs also play in County Senior FA cup competitions. Weakened teams, probably, but still representing the club.
