It's a poor argument, along with the big clubs wanting to get knocked.out early. The last 11 years have seen it shared between Man United, Liverpool, Chelsea and City.

If it was about preventing a Champions League v Europa League tie that could have been sorted by just moving the away team draw to be away in the next fixture. If it was that, there's no reason why four of the six teams should get home draws.

The EFL wants as much money from the tournament as possible, so is keeping the top sides apart and ensuring more games in larger stadiums. There's no logical reason, other than the EFL inflating their income, why the semi-finals should still be over two-legs. That's an absolute joke when claiming there's no time for FA Cup 3rd round replays. The longer the big teams stay in, the more the sponsors are happy, the more the broadcasters are happy, and the extra gate money generated for the central pot. It's not a sporting competition anymore, just a cash cow.

It needs to go in the bin really or just make it a competition for those outside the top flight. How many other leagues have two domestic cup competitions? It can't be many. I think France were one of the only ones, and they did away with their version of the league cup.

Make it League clubs only; place on the play offs for the winner?

I don't disagree with any of the suggestions but DaveG is right, it's about money and making it a competition for non prem teams is akin to making it a glorified Auto windscreens (insert latest sponsor here) tournament, the crowds will be non existent and TV money too.

It's not just about money for the EFL, does anyone think Barnsley will want it scrapping when they get a trip to Old Trafford, which due to the ticketing rules in place will have at least 60k there and possibly TV revenues. For the lower league clubs it's an opportunity for a money spinning tie, with less obstacles and no pesky non league teams getting in their way of money and glory.

Yes, that’s an absolutely spot on post from Dave.

We can complain about all sorts but the past game that I - and probably many others - loved has gone and won’t come back.

Ah, the beautiful game, remember that? Let's put down some jumpers and have a socially-distanced kickabout. Long shots only, and no hugging and kissing.
