Oooh, the Lunchbox was an icon Macca. I am toying (no pun intended!) with getting a Tamiya Hornet as a "toy" rc car so I can offer it to any pal or kid who wants a go so I don't have to lend out my rather expensive, definitely-not-a-toy car! And to enjoy the actual build experience (as the one I have second hand was already built, of course).
NE - I was thinking about getting into planes or gliders rather than cars, but thought the racing side of cars would have more of a social element. Turns out they "race" planes round near me too. And gliders. Or some kind of "competition to goal" for gliders not necessarily a race. Unfortunately, can't do everything.
What is control line then? Is that instead of radio control? G

Nick you need to get your old Tamiya out of the loft. As soon as you see what's available today, you'll want to get electronic speed controller and brushless motor with maybe LiPo battery and charger. Could probably get all that for 80 quid. Your Tamiya might not last very long if you crash it, with all that power, but it would be fun while it lasted! G

Happy. Yes it's a part work. Spun out to 130 issues. They could have cut to 100 but it is what it is. I see it as a project and it's exciting when a new set of parts arrives😀 Technically they supply everything but the screwdrivers were rubbish so I bought an interchangeable set for £10 which works well.
It's painted where appropriate the body is metal and it is incredibly heavy.

Control line is very old, most definitely a pre-cursor to Radio Control. It used to be called U-Control in the States, I recall. Very much a niche thing nowadays, I daresay only specialist clubs will partake.

Great fun on Sunday in the wet. 6 of us racing 2wd, another 4 doing 4wd. I qualified 4th of 6 but lost my hard fought 4th to finish 5th in the final. And this was really last, as the 6th was a 7 year old kid racing for first time. Whereas I am a 49 year old kid racing for the second time, of course.
It was great fun though - I felt I was getting a bit better at the end. My fastest lap time improved throughout. I was in a big pile up at first corner in final and never really recovered. But did some more consistent laps and pushed a bit better.
Grip was non-existent and everyone was sliding all over the place in 2WD. The 4WD were able to more power slide, but in 2WD if you touched the throttle out of a corner, you were likely to 180! There were doughnuts going on all over the place.
I've signed up for the Scottish regional in a couple of weeks. Should be 100 folk out, so will be good fun to be involved. As long as I'm not last out of the 40 odd 2WD I'll be happy! G

Thanks Nick. Racing locally at club this weekend (if it isn't raining!) so last chance to practice. I'm looking forward to the Scottish actually. It will be fun to be involved with lots of drivers. I might need new tyres! How exciting, like real racing! G

Oh crikey, chatting to one of the dads from the club last night, winter indoor racing is a different type of car: GT12. Am I getting one?! More cost and fiddling! Slightly cheaper model to build and run though. We'll see! G

Club race yesterday was fun. Only 8 hardy souls out, but managed 2 heats of 2WDs. I was in slow heat obv, but first of 3 in all 3 qualifiers and hence pole for final and finished first in that too. That's only first in the "B Final" i.e. first of the slow folk, but that's OK!
Felt a bit more confident. Crazy wet and all over the shop but I was handling it OK. So, 119 people entered for next week's regional. 13 heats, 3 rounds each, so 39 heats, 3 finals. A full day out. My goal will not to be last. G

Does #29099 mean that you will be constructing some kind of cover for your lawn, G? Or possibly doing something with a barn?
Are r/c racing tracks flat or do they have ups and down like, say, Knockhill. And does anywhere have events on full size tracks like the above, which for range and vision I suppose would also need the drivers pursuing their cars? I think that would play to your strengths - if is doesn't already exist, you could launch R/C Race and Run :-).
