Yes, I remember that too. This contention goes back a long way I think.

He chose his parents well
I can imagine that that does get emotive. I guess starting places in good quality fell races are more sought after / fewer to go around compared to road racing etc.
I think at the finish there were some confused faces about who on earth this lad was; in truth, pre-covid he was starting to eye up the fells / mountain running as a route to being in the top tier of runners (he's not quite quick enough over the roads and while he is good at XC there's still an awful lot of fast road runners that excel there too) but he was scuppered when the lockdowns came in. Taken his time to get back to fitness, and got in with a decent group via Northumberland Fell Runners. Maybe last weekend's race will be a career highlight though!

It’s not just runners who don’t normally do races wanting places in races used for champs. Local runners who support races year in year out can miss out on running favourite events

I've done a couple of races in non-Championship years and the difference in numbers (especially probably outside the classics) can be staggering.
I scoped out some of his results larkim, and it doesn't look like Saturday was a fluke.

Cheers paul - yes, he's not bad when he gets it right, and is in good form at the moment. Best bit about it (and true of all fell runners, I suspect) is that he loves it!

I also noticed he'd previously won the Hexhamshire Hobble. The year I did it had one of the greatest spreads of cakes I've ever seen.

Out of interest, where are you spotting those results? Is there a "powerof10" equivalent for FR? I can see the archive of results on FRA but it doesn't list individuals there as far as I can see?
Think that 2019 HH race was where he started telling himself he could be quite good, and then in March 2020 everything shut down!

Just a quick Google search from the results from High Cup Nick so it may be haphazard. I don’t really think there’s a central database of fell race results. There are quite a lot on fellrunner site but I don’t know how thorough the database is.
None of my races appear on power of 10 or runbritain for example. One or two of the longer ones appear on ITRA but even that doesn’t follow year to year.

Flower Scar is one of our races, so if he's serious about it I can ask the question. It'd be worth getting on the waiting list first in case an entry can be issued. However, being frank, there's probably other races he'd enjoy more - it's not the best of routes, especially with the sort of numbers being a champs race will bring.
The way my training is(n't) going there's even a chance my place might be up for offer shortly!
