We are currently in Chapel Stile on holiday. The list so far includes: Yellowhammer which was in the hedge outside the cottage. Coal tit, Dipper, Grey Wagtail, Tree Creeper and Goldcrest. A few more on the list, plus a Tawny was hooting on this evenings walk by Elterwater.

Waterfowl noticeably in pairs now, doing lots of synchronised feeding and the odd bit of dancing.

Wagtails come in to the city, don't they, when it's cold? Do you think it's because they think black ice and frost generally look like waterways? I saw lots of waggies today - of the grey and yellow varieties. When I worked 6 miles away on an industrial estate surrounded by countryside, there was a large flock of pied ones which used to congregate at twilight. |

A dipper seen today. Stood on a rock, singing away. Beautiful 😀

I used to see big groups of pied WTs in the middle of carlisle roosting in the trees in the pedestrianised bits, in quite large numbers. Not sure where the greys go from my river; never see them in the winter, even though they are a 'resident' species.

Article from Attenborough Nature reserve, apparently this was a record year with 172 different species seen. Only missed about 70 of them.... attenboroughnaturereserve.wordpress.com |

I had a buzzard for (brief) company on my run today! It was flying straight down the path ahead of me, roosting, when I approached another take off & fly, roost... etc... in that daft animal way. I saw another buzzard this afternoon on a long walk with my kids. We are really lucky around here, used to see lots of barn owls & plenty of small birds, heaps of skylarks from March onwards.
