Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Proper swift screecherama today over the market place of the beautiful little town of Lavenham in Suffolk. I suspect all those old houses probably provide lots of nesting places for swifts. They certainly do for sparrows - I was watching lots of them going in and out of little nesting holes under the eaves.

This year has been our best yet for nesting birds in the garden (which is only a small one, but in a leafy area of suburbia). We've had successful fledgings of great tit, blue tit, robin, blackbird and dunnock, and I've been delighted to watch the youngsters of all of them being fed by their parents in the garden and now feeding themselves independently. I think the blackbirds have embarked on a second brood, too. We also have a wren's nest just by the front door (as in previous years), where the young are evidently still being fed.

A couple more cuckoos yesterday, near Little Town, and in that odd stunted oak wood above Rigg Beck, on the flank of Causey Pike. And one near Allenheads on Sunday.

Red squirrels on both days, too.

Tiny numbers of Swifts this year. In 2s and 3s where there used to be 10s. Sand Martins seem to be down too. Come to think of it, Swallows too.

Watching the natural world shrink in real time.

I have noticed a substantial decline in sand martins on the Nith. There are a few but even last year there were good numbers around. An area around one of the bridges used to have up to a hundred but lucky if I’ve seen ten so far.

Greater spotted woodpecker on the feeder today 😍 first time we've seen one here.

Haven't seen a spotted flycatcher for years now. I assume their numbers have slumped, like so many insectivores.
