Black tailed godwit hanging out on the edge of the moor today, with Curlew and Oyk for size comparison. No bins, but fairly certain, by size, relative to other birds, long straight bill, white rump patch in flight and call. Seemed very keen to be with the other birds. Presumably heading north to breed. Still in winter plumage, or maybe a 2023 bird.

Just spent an enjoyable 10 minutes watching Mr & Mrs Chaffinch bobbing around my garden. That may be the first time I've really noticed the female markings, I'm a bit of a novice really. Last night I saw a couple of grey wagtails, that may also have been a first for me. They were on an old stone bridge on the climb up Kingsdale, so very remote.

Grey wagtails are stunning birds.
I quite like a chaffinch. It's easy to overlook them for more interesting birds, but they have their own charm.

The grey wagtails are quite literally singing from the roof tops here today.
It seems like the moss growing on our willow tree is the best around - we have multiple blue tit pairs flying off with big beakfuls 😍

Heard a screeching bird I'd never heard before when out on mountain bike. Stopped. Merlin couldn't identify it. It was really loud... something caught my eye high up in the trees.
A baby pine Martin shouting for its mum.

I downloaded Merlin a few days ago. Very interesting and has opened my eyes to the everyday birds around me. Back in SA I was a relatively keen birder (albeit inexperienced) but since being in the UK I’ve not really done more than dabble occasionally.
My SA book with my life list is somewhere in the loft. I should think about capturing that electronically at some stage! If memory serves I had about 150 on my list.
I plan to use Merlin as an aid but won’t claim a bird until I actually see enough of it to confirm the ID.
Most interesting ones to pop up in the woods this evening were Green Woodpecker and Peregrine Falcon. Didn’t see as much as a feather of either although the woodpecker call was very clear. Birding in the woods is always tricky with the light and myriad hiding places!

Seems a slightly strange location for a peregrine.
Swifts over Staveley recreation ground this afternoon, along with a sprawk and a goosander

They are known to be around the area. Someone got a good photo a few weeks ago.
