What with destruction of bird watching hides as well (on the news in various locations) it is a sad reflection on the human species. There is no real consequence or punishment dealt out to those who do such things even if they do get caught-- community service or a slap on the wrist just isn't good enough. I saw my first (single!) Swallow this morning! Plus five singing Whitethroats, two singing Reed Warblers, Three Cetti's, two singing Goldcrests.... |

I agree Steve, it is all so sad. The aforementioned off road bikers I mentioned a while back were using the RSPB hide as their base to ride over all the probable lark nesting sites. Part of the dunes have also had a grass fire through careless use of a BBQ right near the little terns colony. Interesting that on my run today there were either swallows or house martins in just about every site you might expect a nest. As I'm new to the area I don't know what numbers should be like, but no more that 3-4 spotted at each site. No swifts or little terns yet, but I'm on close watch for both. |

Didn't manage to get out to the likely cuckoo site this weekend, so no cuckoos for me. Lots of joyous spring warbling, though, including reed warbler, seen as well as heard.

I failed to get out too, so the cuckoo remains illusive. However, there is usually one at the bottom of the garden. Maybe tomorrow?

Lots of Chetti's at Attenborough - I passed a man counting territories and he told me that last year there were 29.

Very close encounter with a red kite - it nearly ended up on my bonnet, trying to snatch up some roadkill between the traffic.

There's an amazing video on twitter of 33000 barnacle geese waiting for the wind to change on the Solway, so they can head home. Apparently it now has and they are moving. twitter.com |
