Went for a delightful cross-country ski jaunt this morning, and the main bird highlight was fieldfares and redwings 'lit up' my the snow - light reflecting off the snow really makes birds look different, and brings out the vibrancy of their colours.

Red Squirrel
The redwings are still in my local park, creeping through the trees. They've been there for about 2 weeks now. Must be some tasty food around. They are such a beautiful bird.

Saw a kingfisher t'other day too - s'bin a while.

Fieldfare in the garden at the moment having a good old feast on the crab apples. Pyracantha berries a metre away are clearly less tempting.

Well, that's some kind of garden record set! The fieldfare was munching away for over 2 hours, by far the longest time I've ever seen any bird spend in the garden. Normally they just fly in, spend a minute or two on the feeders and then clear off again. At one point a blackbird was heading towards the crab apple bush, evidently keen on partaking of the bounty, but the fieldfare wasn't having any of it and chased it away.

Saw a small flock of Fieldfares stalking down a large lawn in the Boots factory grounds. They were like the police looking for clues, a dozen lines doing half a dozen hops, pausing, then 6 more hops.

I spotted a kingfisher today. :)

I then looked for oycs (oyks?) on the beach butonly saw sea gulls, I think the evil wind blew them all away.

I am so missing the sea at the moment! All those birds up at the coast I can't see - the great flocks of waders, the pink-footed geese, the snow buntings. By the time we come out of lockdown, they'll all have gone. (Yes, I know that in the scheme of things this is a minor inconvenience. But still...)

J2R, I had a dune /beach walk this afternoon. The bird activity on the wetlands and marshes just inland from the sea was amazing. Loads of Lapwings, Oyster Catchers, Curlew and distant geese and smaller birds that I can't identify.
