Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Some nice spots today, still can't upload mine, so popping my list here before I lose them.

5 feral pigeons

2 male blackbirds

2 robins

3 starlings
2 goldfinches

Wren
2 sparrows
Magpie

2 herring gulls

Quite a nice mix, the chaffinches seem to have disappeared. If they'd turned up later than the hour I may have added them, but they seem to have gone flyabout.

As expected, once the hour was up, the regulars started trooping back into the garden - long tailed tits and starlings along with some of the others mentioned (they're also regulars, I just forgot about them earlier). No-show for the redwings today either, which is surprising.

The stats will be based on scaling up what's seen in the hour, so recording what's usually around will actually be unhelpful.

Missed a few of the usual suspects, but the kestrel was the first I've seen from the house*. Today's list (the lazy way):

* I've been told I've seen one obnce before, but the memory is going.

Is that even if the weather’s shocking and Nothing comes out at all? I suppose at that point that’s why it’s done over 3 days isn’t it?

flanker, my thoughts exactly, which is why I stuck rigorously to my hour, even though I know that in the end it turned out to be what I would say was unrepresentative of what I would normally see. I'll leave it to the number-crunchers to crunch the numbers, rather than try to nudge or second-guess them.

Thank you for this part F - as you know I’m not statistically minded at all or from a background where I’ve had the experience - so this is really helpful 👍 Hence then being able to relate it to the event being over a whole three days. I suppose if the bird isn’t in our garden then it *might* be being picked up somewhere else.... or even if we know that in an hour (because to be fair we’re spending a shit load if time looking at our garden) what we would see normally wouldn’t matter so much as they will have some kind of scaling algorithm set up which would take into account anomalies etc.

I still might have this wrong, and I know it’s not really about birds 😉 but if I don’t ask or try I won’t learn will I?!? 😝

You can explain it to me the next time we see you (please let it be soon) over a bottle of something 🤣😝 Or not.... and we can just chat our usual shit, do dipper impressions and make Bittern noises 😝😀😀😀

I had a camera set up on one of my bird feeder platforms today, here's a few of the better pics.
