I had what I thought for a second was a starling fly directly over my head today in silhouette. As it passed over I realised it was a greater spotted woodpecker

ff, I suppose you're right, I hadn't thought of it as such. Definitely the key part of the meadow pipit's show flight, but yes, thinking about it, I've seen skylarks doing it too.

By my upstairs study window, there is a nestbox on the wall of the house. I can see bluetits flying back and forth to it, although I can't actually see the box itself. For the last couple of weeks they seem to have been doing something involving lots of incessant tapping, which I can hear. I have no idea what they are doing. I fear they may been watching some nestbox makeover programme on TV and have big ideas.

Well DT my missus has reviewed the BTO video and is staying with female merlin. She says brown back, black tipped tail and wing tips, speckled front, stands on fence post or in tree hunched, flies purposefully, never hovers is not kestrel. She thinks she's seen the grey/silver coloured male too. I haven't. Pheasant and Ms Pheasant being very loved up around the field too. Awww. Spring! No social distancing for pheasants. G |
