I wonder at what point red kite populations are deemed self-sustaining and require no further help? I have to say that, with all the red kites, there was a greater density of raptors around the Kirkcudbright area than I've ever seen elsewhere in Britain, apart from at raptor roosts. Yet they were still obviously getting helped, as there as a Red Kite Feeding Station about 15-20 miles from where we were staying. Can't be much fun being a dead rabbit round there.

um
Red kites are very common here - certainly there's getting to be residents on most major roads (M3, M40 & A34, A36 - particularly where dual carriageway) - seems to be every 1-2 miles and spreading year by year. Anything flat and dead by the side of a road seems fair game. There's also quite a few buzzards here (NE New Forest & Salisbury/Romsey) - but have yet to see any conflicts or shared space between them. |

Juvenile Greenshank on the res here today which is a site tick for me, they don't turn up here very often. Otherwise it's pretty quite here at present apart from large numbers of Canada, Tufted and Coot! A few waders are starting to pop up (LRP, RP, Common Sand and Dunlin mainly) and duck numbers are starting to rise. There seemed to be a fair number of Blackcap around last week but haven't noticed them the last couple of days, though I did spot a Willow Warbler today.

Until the last month or so there were so many red kites flying beside the A1 between the A14 and Peterborough that we couldn't believe they would have enough to eat - (daughter counted to 27 one day) The last couple of times I've made the journey I haven't seen a single one. I do still see one over my house at least once a day |

MOst of those are fantastic. Not sure if it inspires me or just makes me want to sell the camera gear! |
