I have a very particular definition of 'northern england'. New-CASSEL and Carlisle are too far north to be northen. The north of border-ish sort of region is an entity unto itself in my book.
Then we have Derby. That's too far north to be in the midlands and too far south to be in the north, surely?
I went to Uni in Nottingham and once loudly commented, in a taxi rank at something like 2am, that Nottingham was in the midlands. I got chased out of town, quite literally. To this day I think it's because I was obviously incorrect, rather than being a southern student jessie.
