Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Under Armour shoes win the women's race. Interesting?

Bit harsh on the actual runner 😂

Stephen Scullion runs in UA, he is fairly well known for his podcast these days. I have listened to a little of his thoughts, he mentioned their shoe a couple of times, very favourably as you would expect.

As far as I can see they are yet to appear on the feed Instagram uber tester @labratrundown but given they've now won the womens' New York marathon 😉 he might give them a spin

LOL fair point!

Good for the sport though if there is something of a level playing field being established, even if some of it may be psychological; runners can stand on the start line in their preferred or sponsored brand and not feel they are totally outgunned by Nike.

Haha, yes exactly what I thought, but it's commentary on where the sport is currently.

What's the UA shoe?

I certainly haven't recalibrated all times fully yet. Women HM sub 76 was an immediate wow for me and I still have that reaction initially. Just checked and there were only 3 pre 2016 (and only 1 in 2016), there's now been 75 total, 64 from 2018 onwards so still very impressive but not as wow as when it was very rare.

"Lokedi raced today in the 324 Under Armour Elite – a version of the Flow Velociti Elite that the brand launched this fall – which was only approved by World Athletics a week ago."

There was a school of thought when the supershoes first appeared that the improvement was really from doping. That's obviously not true but some doping may have gone under the radar that would have stood out even without a positive test previously.

General opinion seems to be prett universal that supershoes have been a game changer to elite performances.

What's people's thoughts on why the New York records go all the way back to :
men - 2011 Geoffrey Mutai 2:05:06
women - 2003 Margaret Okayo 2:22:31

Lack of pacers so more of a race (but it would have been back then too assuming similar lack of pacers in 2003/2011) ?

Old records are suspect ?

New York less prestigous or less prize money now, so top runners go elsewhere (no idea if thats true, dont think so) ?

A series of bad weather conditions ?

That's Ross Tucker's perspective on it; that the shoes have clouded the "obvious doper" position quite badly. Though his starting point is that the shoes are a "bad thing" overall, and I'm less convinced of that.

But when there are plenty in the sport that don't have faith in the the anti-doping regimes, it does add insult to injury when every athlete who demonstrates a good leap forward in performance can automatically point to the shoes as a a significant factor in their progression.
