If it is for an entire running career it seems just to be a measure of longevity?

If you ran 1,000 marathons and no ultras, your number would still be 26

Actually it's miles in a day, rather than on one run.... So you could have a higher number than 26 without having ever run an ultra. Some long double training days would do it.
