Must have been a close run thing?
Stokes or Irani?

Brutal choice, think Stokes shaded it by not appearing on Talksport with Alan Brazil.

Stewart won't cope with opening and the gloves. Actually drop Malan and put A N Other as keeper and the opening would be sorted.

Sadly it was a composite team, so if Stewart doesn’t open then you’re picking one of Maddy, Hameed or Crawley.

Stewart opens with Buttler as wicketkeeper is probably a better option despite Buttler's failings. Stokes at 6.

I think that’s fair. Checked and Stewart averaged 46.7 when playing as a specialist opener.

A lot of those 90s players had low averages against Australia.

57.5 Days of Xmas
May I humbly submit the following from 1984:
Fowler Broad C Tavaré Gower (c) Lamb Botham Downton (w) Ellison Allott Agnew Pocock
A top 3 to rival the current lot and a procession of county trundlers doing the bowling. Competent keeper but not a convincing no.7 batsmen with no batting talent at all in the tail. And a less than convincing captain.

The current set of bowlers don’t look so bad on that context. Batsmen, meh.

That attack is something else, although I have a soft spot for Ellison as Edgbaston 1985 was the second test match I saw live.
Drove up with a mate, we lived in his Vauxhall viva for the 5 days of the test.
