Hales was a better white ball player, with a lot of red ball runs behind him when he was given a go. Hales tried to curb his natural white ball game and ended up as a sad shotless statue. Roy will either be pushed into the same situation, or he will carry on playing too loosely, nick off too much and end up being discarded.
