I lived in Farnborough (Cove) and worked in Aldershot for a year or two. Neither of them were great, but I preferred Farnborough. I learned to swim at Farnborough pool in my early 20s as it goes.
Leisure time was mostly spent in Farnham (which is actually nice) and Guildford, which I like in a 'my kind of town' sort of way (see also Chelmsford, Oslo, Cambridge and any one of a handful of other 'small cities').
Preston's a shit hole. Surprised it hasn't come up already.

I met Mrs TRO in Bagshot/Shagbot. It also had a pub called the Hero which reliably served you from the age of about 15. People came from miles, most of the car park was either bikes or L played mopeds. By age 17 you’d move on to other places.

Crappest town I’ve been to is St Helens. Only green I ever saw within the town was people’s teeth. Way worse than Huddersfield IMO.
Other nominations would be Feltham, Warrington and Woking.
I’d chuck Egham and Guildford in as well, but that’s because I got beaten up in those places rather than the actual crapness of them.....

I didn't get beaten up in Woking but it was a damn' close run thing.
I also dislike Slough and Bracknell but for different reasons involving them having no soul whatsoever.

Ask him if he was part of a mob of 25 who chased 5 16 year olds out of a disco at the town hall. I was one of the 5, not the one who was thrown over a fence but the one caught near the underpass.

I last got beaten up at a disco at the Cambridge YMCA in 1976. I'm sure I deserved it. If anything I am more annoyingly mouthy now, but am also more physically off-putting.
