Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

Rich from Worcester parkrun here, if I can offer any help let us know, we got ours sorted fairly quickly once the funding was in place.

Cheers Rich.....the funding is not goign to happen, the plan is that the uni of GLoucestershire are buying timing kit etc (for a lot less than £6,000).

I'd love it to be a propper Park Run, but the uni are offering this on a plate and tell me the council are not interested in funding anything.

Are you doing your own thing because the Council won't fund you?
If you do this Cheltenham runners wont be part of parkrun, not very inclusive, like I say here to help....prefer to chat direct on email richard.ralphs@gmail.com

Thanks. Got it, I think you should canvass local runners, about the plan not to be an "official" parkrun.

Hi - it would be a massive shame if Cheltenham "PR" wasn't an official joined up one. I've done several Parkruns all ove the country, as many others do, and for Cheltenham not to be joined up for timings and number of runs completed etc etc would be a massive mistake.
How can Gloucester Uni think they know better than a very established, professional, national and highly organised system?
The Parkruns system works -don't even bother thinking anyone starting from scratch can better or even equal Parkruns.
Yes canvas opinion, and if help is needed, ask!

On reflection, it won't just be a "shame" if Cheltenham PR wasnt an official one - it would be a bloody disaster!

£6000! I'd class that as a substantial barrier to entry and, big parkrun fan as I am, I can see a sum of that size stopping quite a few start ups. Although if you can't get the funding any other way ... you might find parkrun HQ may find a way to help.

If I put my jauntily cynical bonnet on, I might say that if somewhere like, say, Greater London had a commitment to put a parkrun in every borough (whether that in itself is a good idea or not), setting a £6000 startup sum would be quite a good way to get money which could then be used for the "greater good" of parkrun.

I hope it can come under the official Parkrun umbrella too. I'm still hopeful it will. I discovered that the Council has a "healthy lifestyles development officer" this week who sounded as though she could be helpful. I've passed her details on to Joint_ear.

Cheers for all the input guys, I too approached this wanting a genuine parkrun. On meeting Gary from uni of glos, he has experience of kicking off Leeds parkrun in his previous job with Leeds uni, and had a fixed plan to get a run going in Cheltenham, but without the need to spend 6k.

As he had the experience, resources and plan, I was happy to join in, we don't need 2 runs....yes this may be the Aldi brand of 5k free timed run, but we currently have no run at all, and 6k seemed steep to me. On consideration, for me, it boiled down to would I want to run this regularly, Marshall it, and help to make it a success regardless of if it was an official parkrun? Of course I would.

However it's not just me now, and with the great research done on funding, and strong feeling that it should be an official parkrun, this needs to be discussed again with the uni team. I'm passing on the feedback and the great contact details daisy and Reef have provided for funding people. This isn't "my" event....I'm just the guy who started the discussion.....perhaps some of you guys would be up for meeting up with the uni team so we can get it debated? Now is the time.....please email me if you are.....john.tierney at yahoo.com. it's already slipped from an early October start, and I've not met up with Gary myself for weeks, so getting everyone together should get things moving in the right direction.
