I loved TWOFS so try not to describe it as steampunk as the term tends to send people scampering for the hills. But it *is* steampunk for all that.
I Am Pilgrim is the best big blockbuster thriller I've read for a very long time. You could try that.

Id vote twofs. I liked "where d'you go Bernadette" too and "gone girl" on the more trashy front (nothing wrong with a light read)

Gone Girl is hardly recent now - not only was TGOTT 'the new Gone Girl', but I believe something is now the new TGOTT - 'After Anna' possibly.
I *H*A*T*E*D* Gone Girl. I may have mentioned this before.

Thanks, all. Probably staying away from trashy thrillers for this present (read plenty, mind); other than that, fiction is the only clue I have. I'll check out TWOFS next time I'm near waterstones or equivalent, but more suggestions welcome, unless the consensus is that crowdsourcing Christmas presents is not what this thread is for.

glad to see you can bear a proper grudge against a book you don't like. I was given both books this year so blame the giver I thought they were new!

I think I may be speaking out of turn here - that of the 2016 paperbacks this thread has talked about, TWOFS would probably be our book of the year.

I didn't care for it too much, but I haven't read too much new fiction this year.

On the other hand, I am really enjoying BTOOT which suggests Greppers and I are incompatible book-wise

Don't think I've read anything recent enough to recommend.
Also, I have no idea what steampunk is.
But have requested December's book from the library.
