Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

That’s a really interesting debrief write up particularly for me regards his goals.

I ended up walking nearly half my debut 100 miler due to blisters. I was delighted to have overcome the problems but I didn’t enjoy it and it showed in my attitude to those helping me on the day. Of everything that happened that day my biggest take out was simply “smile”. It’s really refreshing to read of someone so experienced and elite to say something similar.

John Kelly started a solo, unsupported mid-winter Ramsay around 15 mins ago. No one has ever done a sub-24 mid winter Ramsay in any form.

How's the weather looking for him? My first thoughts are this must be about the mildest (I'd nearly say warm but that's about sea level and a couple of hundred miles south) mid-winter I can even envisage.

He's said it was down to stomach issues again. Barely eating and potential dodgy weather. Anyway, here's his own words rather than me paraphrasing.

------

Well, another week, another solo winter round stopped short for "just" a great day out & solid training. I knew this outcome had a high probability, as I had a low risk tolerance on this one & the forecast was iffy. I'm glad I got to have some solo adventures in the Welsh & Scottish mountains while we're still here. The Highlands are an amazing, special place, even if a bit moody. Originally I was planning a go at all three rounds, but I'm going to focus on figuring out what's wrong with my stomach & getting ready for an even bigger adventure in the English mountains later this year.

My stomach was being uncooperative again. I at least didn't puke, but I accomplished that by eating < 100 calories in the last 10+ hours (so was carrying an extra ~4K 😂). Even with that my legs were oddly still working fine, but low calorie intake messes with the abilities to stay warm, stay awake, & make good decisions. I was starting to feel the first two, & wanted nothing to do with the third.

I had already made some big navigational mistakes with clag and low visibility overnight, & then the somewhat decent weather window I had hoped for started closing fast. The rain and wind were really getting nasty up top (and the forecast said once it started getting bad it would only get worse).

I climbed halfway up the first peak of the last section, & stopped to sit & ponder the situation. All I needed to do was 20 more miles at average 30 minute pace (not a given in that terrain in rough conditions, but it was still well within reach to complete the 1st sub 24 solo winter Ramsay). But the downside risk was large. There weren't any easy exits for a while if I continued, & when it came to it, I'd much rather spend New Year's Eve evening with my family than risk being hunkered down alone in a storm in the mountains.

I hope you all have a great New Year's too, & enjoy the adventures in 2022!

His last blog said he was planning another attempt, probably in May.
