Also, I was stuck exactly like Badger. I eventually did read The Quarry. I still have The Hydrogen Sonata. I started but couldn't go on. If I read it, there will be no more new Iain Banks and no more Culture.

I have said this before but I've never read any Iain M. Maybe I'll start after GE, which I started last night.

The Player Of Games is a good place to start, as recommended by McG and others. Worked for me, anyway.

Hydrogen Sonata is the final one of his Culture series, though he did write a handful of non-Culture sci-fis. The first is Consider Phlebas which is a right rollicking adventure, but my fave remains Use of Weapons which has the most unexpected and brilliant twist of anything I've ever read. The sort of thing that makes you want to go back and see where you missed the clues. But unlike say, Sixth Sense where knowing that there is a twist is tantamount to knowing what the twist is, UoW plays its cards very cleverly close to its chest. And is also a right rollicking adventure.

(UoW is No 3, the one after TPoG)

(But it helps when reading UoW to have read CP/TPoG first as these familiarise you with the world of the Culture, and specifically Special Circumstances)

TPoG is definitely the place to start. I'll be interested in your linguist's view on some of the ideas about language.

Now I want to start it NOW. But must read GE first.
