The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free.
But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient.
Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead.
Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?
I have just two hives and a confirmed hobbyist with a couple of great little Italian queenies producing a good set of brood through out the summer. just debating weather to make a split now and try and get it through the winter, or just leave them be over the colder months... yep I'm in the southern hemisphere you see.
Question: Weโve just bought a small area of woodland and within it are some long abandoned hives (housings are beginning to rot in places, obviously not been used for many years). Inside there are frames with honeycomb structures.
Can the wax still be used? Iโm thinking it would be a shame to waste it.
If it's for bees within a hive then yes, there's no reason why it can't be used, but the hives would need to be repaired if possible or you could put the frames into new hives.
Or the wax could be melted down, ran through muslin to get rid of the bits, and made into candles. There are many YouTube videos showing how to do that.
i have just taken 30kg from both of my hives and have left them with enough to keep them going for the first few months of Autumn, have put some of the Bavarol strips in so will need to take them out in 4 weeks. Both are looking quite healthy so am hopeful they will survive the winter.
And the rest of you are looking forward to a productive summer ?
We don't harvest in the Spring because the Summer here is the hardest season for our bees. It's very hot, everything dies and there's very little foraging so we leave them alone until the Autumn. Autumn/Winter is the best time for our bees when everything comes back to life and there's much more in flower.
We've done well with swarms recently though, added about another 8 colonies ๐
xT350, that is a good amount of honey, 30kg per hive, wow. We are in Spain and are pleased to get 10kg. Although the style of hive in Spain is a bit different and also, we are very holistic in our approach and take honey sparingly, as the climate can be tough on the girls in Andalucia. Where abouts are you?
