Thanks for not giving the game away GlennR.

Let's see if anyone else knows.

If not, next time I come up to Cambridge to visit my daughter, I'll buy you a pint in the Earl of Beaconsfield.

I googled, and got "In their coats and their ties" - and yes, I bought the album too, but not when it was first released, I suspect - probably three or four years later.

Good clue :)

Yes, that's right.

If I remember correctly, the record company weren't happy that a couple of suspects were named in the song. They were worried that they might get sued. So they asked the writer of the song to change the lyrics, leaving out the names of the suspects.

Needless to say, the song had already been recorded, so the writer apparently changed quite a few lyrics & rerecorded the song.

So yes, that line that Ive quoted is from the second recording. The original did indeed say, "All the criminals in their coats & their ties."

I'll see if anyone else comes up with the song title & singer before revealing all tonight.

Okay, so it was Hurricane by Bob Dylan from the album Desire, released in January 1976.

I'm not a great lover of using Google, as personally, I think it's akin to cheating, but let's face it, none of us are getting any younger.

So, referencing my post above, I did a double check. Bob Dylan wrote the original lyrics in July 1975, but did change them at the record labels request in October 1975. This didn't however stop a legal action by one of the witnesses. It was dismissed in court though.

Has anybody else on this thread got anymore obscure lyrics we can rack our brains out trying to guess who the singer was & the song?

The village square stands quiet, the curfew still in force
The streets are even clear of dogs and whores

Early 70s album track, dragged from memory so may not be 100% correct as I have not googled to check, saw them at the Capitol in Cardiff autumn 1972, great concert
