I did think that handball would be better on grass given how often those trying to score end up on the floor.

In terms of basic participation basketball, it would normally be something along the 3x3 variety (even with different numbers) and I presume that's how that ended up in the Olympics.

Field Handball still exists and there are international competitions and so on. It started out that way and morphed into a mainly indoor game over decades - a bit like if indoor five-a-side slowly became the standard version of football.

Someone on the commentary during the Olympics said that there are more people regularly playing 3x3 basketball in New York than there are Rowing competitively worldwide. I dont know how you'd get to that stat but it feels realistic.

Basketball is the most street sport available in the US. All you need is a ball. Given the number of courts available across the country, especially cities like New York, 3x3 is the stateside version of jumpers for goalposts.

Not surprised given they have the biggest basketball league in the world. If anything, the UK probably lags behind for basketball, even in Europe. Neither men or women made the Olympics for example.

Neither men or women made the Olympics for example. Basketball, ice hockey, US football - all big North American sports which have never really got a great foothold over here, and with the exception of US Football, they've "clicked" across Europe better. Is it an infrastructure thing? |
