Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Melbourne Marathon Festival - 10k

To avoid last years debacle (got lost en route to the race in the city, resulted in me in tears, stormed out of car and turned up on start line with 5mins to spare)....we decided to travel down on the train the day before and stay in the city at this beautiful boutique hotel we know. It was only as we were about to board the train that I realised I hadn't considered how to get from hotel to start line.....as the hotel was 4km away and no public transport until after the race started. So in a flash of genius I ran from hotel to train station (500m) jumped on a 'Boris Bike' (public bikeshare) found an abandoned cycle helmet (compulsory in Oz so saved me $5 rental) and biked the 3.5k to the start line where there was a bike return point!

I knew I hadn't done the training and was only planning on a plod aiming to keep each k sub 7min allowing a walk through the drinks station. Perfect cool conditions (well it was 7am), passed the marathon leaders (Kenyan) at 6k which spurred me on and Mick popped up unexpectedly at 8k. Fantastic finish in the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground). Expensive race but the showbag was a rucksack with a medal, fruit and energy drinks at the finish. Bike warmup made all the difference, legs and calf no ill effects.

Next year I'll be back to the half (or maybe the mara ;-)

Thought of all the GER ers running later on Sunday - come on Werry!
