I think there was a wait of about 15 minutes one year that I did it.
Be kind, perhaps whoever organises it struggles to get enough helpers ? Hope the water bottle and distance you went was worth the effort.
they take entries for over 4500 runers at £14 a go so for a turnover of £63,000+ they can afford to pay for a few helpers. It's a typical council run piece of rubbish. I've run over 250 races and this is the only one to start more than a couple of minutes late (it did in 2006 too):)

Oooh dear, I think I sense a very cross Marts, and to rub salt into the wound, Thorney would have cost less than half the price and you would have got a baseball cap into the bargain.
thrice the price in petrol to thorney though:)
