_andy A tough old one this was. Not so old really - a brand new race, but a great route with a mixture of road at the start and finish, then trail for the middle three(ish) miles, some rough track, narrow paths, grassy and muddy farm tracks with fields too. Pushed at the downhill start and quickly went from 4th to 7th on the initial uphill. Was surprised to then feel strong on the next flat section into the wind and caught up with 6th and went straight past. Drated 5th for a bit before feeling I had a lot more and went for it, getting a good gap. Kept the pressure on up the grassy hill track, with 4th place in sight (almost) all the time until near the top. Felt good once the turn for home (downhill) came and just let the legs go - lots of very fast descent. Nasty killer rise near the end made for a crawl round the football field at the very end, with 4th too far ahead to chase and 6th some way back. Best of all, picked up 1st MV (since cake muncher placed 3rd overall) and the beer to go with it. Excellent tea and cakes (profiteroles and scones no less) afterwards.
