Hi everyone, I haven't posted on here for a long time so most people probably don't know me. During Covid-19 lockdown, I decided to have a go at creating a YouTube channel (well technically I actually created it back in 2008 with the intention of using it for videos from Fetchies but I never really used it).
I'm starting to create various running (and relaxation) related videos, some of those being virtual runs. I've got myself a GoPro and gimbal so they look nice and smooth. I've created two so far and I'm in the process of filming another.
I was wondering what people's opinions are (for those that run on treadmills) with regards to music and scenery What's your preference? Do you prefer videos to have music or natural sounds? What's your favourite scenery to look at?
The problem I have with natural audio is that I sound like a dog with a nasty cough when I'm tired, so it takes a lot of concentration to make 'nice' running sounds!
I watched some of your video; looks like a nice route! The image is nice and stable too. Is that because of the gimball, do you think, or do you have a one of the newer GoPros?
When I run on my treadmill I tend to either watch running documentaries, or re-runs of old races. I have an old TV on the wall in front of it.
The 'problem' with music is that its quite individual isn't it? One persons uplifting is another's irritating! For that reason I'd go for natural sounds rather than over-dubbed music. Or perhaps a few different versions of the same video with different soundtrack options?
The sound of your feet and the general ambiance is good in your video, apart from a bit of wind noise occasionally. Not a big problem though. But the breathing is a bit offputting as its out of sync with the person watching's breathing. Perhaps you could have a remote microphone clipped to your back? Maybe that would pick up your feet and the ambience?
icenutter, sorry I didn't see that you had replied - I thought it was a dead thread!
I was using a gimbal and a GoPro Hero7 with hyperstabalisation. I was quite impressed how smooth it is, especially when you consider how ineven the ground is in places.
Since that video I've uploaded this one, which has no music just natural sounds (filmed in 4K as well):

I agree about the music and also the breathing, I did buy a microphone adaptor and mic the other day. I've tried it while recording a relaxing walk video but there are a few problems - I can't use it with a gimbal because it imbalances, the audio is also very quite and I can't charge the GoPro via the gimbal while it's plugged in. A clip on one like you say would be good, I will have to look into it at some point.
I've also recorded (my best yet) a run from Bradford-on-Avon to Bath along the cycle track and that has come out well (no music either). It's scheduled to be published on 32st July.
Thanks runnerbeann. I recorded another (10 mile) run along the Tarca trail in Devon the other week, so will hopefully have that up soon.
I've got lot's of different routes lined up (around 50 or so). It's actually really hard to film a virtual run, it makes the run itself feel about twice as hard, but I enjoy the end result!
