It could be a jelly fungus, Lizzie, but it's not that one. It's dark green and seaweed-shaped.

It is seaweed. Or the family commonly called seaweed. It likes it damp and it likes certain types of stone too. We have it here and we are well away from the sea. Damp, waterlogged conditions and the right acidity and it is off.

In stead of a loggery, the Victorians called it a stumpery, why not create no dig raised vegetable beds? Put cardboard down, make edges but these aren't actually essential, then put 10 cms of mulch down. If buying in, a 50/50 compost topsoil mixture from a local aggregate merchant should be cheap by the tonne. You can then grow veggies in your front garden, problem solved!

The back garden needs drainage from the sound of it. Without actually coming to take a look, I can't suggest any solutions... but it may just be a matter of ramming some pipes in and fill them with grit. It sounds like the soil has been heavily compacted in the past, breaking through this compacted layer is what the pipes do, it should drain.

Maybe I should come and take a look! Haven't seen you and Mr B. for years. Not been to the Lakes for years either!

I suggest drainage which would be more environmentally sound but would probably be a good thing for the house as well as the garden :)

A few of the cyclamen that have spread round my garden (plus colchicums that have spread nicely too.)

Ooh it does. I like colchicums; I'd forgotten about them.

Some seasonal scenes from the garden.

Still a few raspberries to pick.

Some late roses, growing in the sky.

The mossy lawn, with the frost rime receding as the sun clears the hedge. Some tufts of moss have been pulled - it may be the robins.
