Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I was a bit disappointed, because I liked Maintenance of Headway so very much. This... feels as though it's trying to use a very light form to imply some much heavier things, and somehow the combination doesn't make me want to put the work in. Not bothered so much about the grass and so on, I'm not reading this as if it is a work of hard SF where the author is supposed to have done the hard work to get all the maths right.

I don't think getting the maths right is the exclusive domain of hard SF. I expect all but the lightest, most disposable SF to get the maths right - I don't consider most of what I read 'hard', although a buddy has got me to agree to try Hannu Rajaniemi which I think is going to be way beyond my intellect.

(I hated that Hannu Rajaiemi book Greppers. Even blogged my hatred for it.)

Ooh, thanks for posting this. I really like Magnus Mills, wasn't aware he'd written anything new in several years.

At the risk of getting very tangential, I disagree, Grep; if I remember correctly, you're something of a fan of Peter Hamilton, and his faster-than-light drives are handwave magic for getting his characters around fast enough to make his space operas work. Which is fine, but it isn't getting the maths right; it's taking the same kind of liberty as not worrying about who's cutting the grass in order to tell the story you want to in the way you want to do it.

Well yes and no - wormhole travel is an accepted sci-fi conceit, yes? He gets (most) of the rest of the maths right. Although I have Doubts about Norfolk Tears.
