Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Assuming you are doing the 37 mile 'classic' route K5:

I am always a road shoe devotee, up to and including WHW. But certainly for Speyside Way. Ran the race once and much of the course once or twice a year.

Early part is a good trail on the old railway, easier underfoot than the Dava Way for instance. Can get very wet in bad weather. Then a bit of tarmac followed by forest road up and over the shoulder of Ben Aigan. The final part of the descent can be slippery on a dirt path.

Then a longish road section to Fochabers followed by good woodland paths which never get that muddy in my fairly extensive experience. Tarmac through Spey Bay and more good woodland paths. Final part is decent railway trail and tarmac into Buckie, beware the short uphill finish if they use the same park as a few years back!

Kyle Greig posted some good route footage for the Moray Coast trail, look out for Speyside Way coverage.

Sadly I can't marshal this year. If I'm not in the US due to shifting Covid rules I'm going to a wee village you might have heard of called Killin 😉.

I would say hybrids. There is more road than you think but some sections especially the first main downhill can be very muddy.

57.5 - yeah, just the 37 miler, I do fancy the 100km one as well, but not fit enough for that at the moment

Thanks all, very useful, will probably go with the Hoka Challengers, although possibly the roadies if very dry in the run up to raceday.

A lot of tarmac Gus. I really struggled with Roclites or whatever I did it in. Beautiful route. Enjoy. :-) G

Baz - in my mind, once you drop to ultra pace then up to about 40m can be done off marathon type training. Never done it, but if I were to attempt something like 100km, then would need more specific ultra training with B2B runs, etc which I don't have time to do.

HappyG - just checked back your log, you did it in F-Lites - ouch, not much cushioning in them for 37 miles !!!

Did Devil in Flites too. The Lairig Mor and my battered toes made me go Hokas for longer rockier stuff after that! :-) G

That’s disappointing - was hopeful they could’ve made it work.
