Now I'm curious. I looked it up and in general, it meant exactly what I thought it meant*. So I wonder what you both thought it meant?
*There was an additional definition with a specifically African reference

I know. I got it in the end because it was the only word I could make fit. My Chambers thesaurus gives the clue word if you look up the solution, but it doesn't give the solution if you look up the clue.

That's a crosswordese kind of word - the kind where there's not many alternative words that fit the grid for the setter but which don't get much everyday usage- apse or erne, for example.
