Naomi is bang on!

Did this in 2007, was pre-warned that race etiquette does not apply. It's free-for-all, barging and pushing and water stations almost resembled a scrum lol.

There are no piles of plastic bottles across the road at one mile intervals. If piles of plastic bottles tripping you up every mile are more your sort of thing, get a charity place for London instead.

Seriously, though, it's a big marathon. It feels like a big marathon. It was only my second marathon so I had no idea what to expect of a race that size, and didn't find it too uncomfortable.

Don't get me wrong. It was my 3rd Marathon and I did enjoy it, in fact I loved it. A PB achieved, in a lovely city and as DG states you pass most of the tourist sites.

Enjoy it, but there's no harm in being forewarned.

P.E...
Basically stay away from the edges of the roads in the pens, get there early to use the toilets and you'll be fine.

I loved it (I did moan at the end of it about the hold up at the first water station) but it's pretty flat bar the underpasses but they are only gentle slopes, it was warm the year I did it as well but again that doesn't really bother me. They had powerade the year I did it but that was late on in the race. Infact I might do it next year now....

I did it this year. They have a wave start system now, bringing each pen forward one at a time, and letting them go when the road ahead has cleared a bit. So I was running at pace straight away- no scrum this year. The end was a shambles though.
I didn't think the atmosphere was that good - lots of quiet sections with no spectators after all. Its a lovely flat course, lots to see. I'd definitely recommend it :-)

Imagine starting the London marathon at Hye Park Corner.

And not closing it to traffic.

That's like the start of Paris.

And if you are running anything slower than 3 hours you will have to walk through some of the parks at around 35k as the get too narrow and crowds of supporters seem to think it's a good idea to stand on the blue line.

Oh, and getting defacated on in the starting pen.

It wasn't crowded at all this year. Think it's only the second year they've done the wave start and I think it worked well. Much better than walking for miles in London before you get a space to run in. Can't comment on the mess in the pens as I didn't notice any
