Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch
or for an ad-free Fetcheveryone experience!

Nothing beats a good bonfire! I have a huge pile of brash to burn as my tree surgeon friend coppiced my native hedge road side a couple of weeks ago. I am waiting for a few dry days and no hooly blowing. Should have tried this afternoon, even with the strong wind, because now it is worse and tipping it down again. Sigh!

An old boy on the radio gardening programme always used to give the recipe for a sure-fire compost activator, sounds like you may need it Dvorak. It's 1 part urine to 6 parts water, so you just need to pee in your compost bin, or a bucket etc.

No, it was a proper "old-boy" gardener, but I remember Bob, whatever happened to him?

Sowed some broad bean seeds in root trainers. The root trainers have been used for a number of years, and are threatening to fall apart. This will probably be their last year.

I have just stripped all the ivy between 6" up to about 8' on the old apple tree. I had to use a tree saw to get through the stems (trunks!) so I could prise most of it off. I hope I haven't left it too long and that the tree survives - the top bark is quite soft and crumbly in places.

And I have assorted tree top grot in my eyes from where I was working over my head.

Still, the tree looks a lot neater!

Shame about the ivy; it's a fabulous wildlife resource, wintr nectar and nesting / roosting sites. It rarely kills healthy trees.
